Monrovia, Liberia– The Association of Female Lawyers of Liberia (AFELL), through its PeaceGen Project, has concluded a Policy Advocacy Engagement Town Hall Meeting in Montserrado County, calling for greater public participation in transitional justice and stronger efforts to advance sustainable peace and national reconciliation in Liberia.
The town hall brought together community members, stakeholders, women, and youth to discuss the importance of transitional justice and its role in addressing the legacy of Liberia’s civil conflict. Discussions centered on what transitional justice entails, why it is essential, and how it can contribute to lasting peace through accountability, truth-telling, reconciliation, and institutional reform.
Participants reflected on the enduring impact of the country’s civil war and stressed that confronting past human rights violations is critical to preventing future conflicts. They emphasized that justice and reconciliation must go hand in hand if Liberia is to achieve lasting national unity.
The meeting also highlighted the importance of empowering women and young people to play active roles in peacebuilding and transitional justice initiatives. Speakers described both groups as indispensable partners in promoting healing, social cohesion, and national reconciliation.
Participants further maintained that individuals responsible for atrocities committed during Liberia’s civil war should be held accountable through due process, regardless of their social or political status. They noted that ending impunity is essential to strengthening the rule of law and building public confidence in Liberia’s justice system.
AFELL Vice president Cllr. Kelley said the engagement forms part of its ongoing PeaceGen Project, which seeks to raise awareness and encourage inclusive dialogue on transitional justice and peacebuilding across Liberia.
