‎MONROVIA: Liberia is actively participating in the 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Assembly of Heads of State and Government in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. departed Liberia on February 12, 2026, to represent the nation at the summit, which runs from February 14 to 15, 2026 at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa.

The Assembly brings together leaders from across the continent to discuss pressing continental challenges and set policy direction for the year ahead.
‎This year’s summit is convened under the official African Union Theme of the Year  “Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063.”

The theme highlights the critical link between water and sanitation services and the broader goals of the continental development blueprint known as Agenda 2063, particularly inclusive growth, climate resilience, and human well‑being.‎ Before the Assembly, preparatory sessions  including meetings of the Permanent Representatives’ Committee and the AU Executive Council  have emphasized water security alongside unity, sustainable development, and coordinated continental action.

‎According to AU press reports, leaders at the summit are expected to deliberate on: Strengthening water and sanitation services across Africa as a foundational development priority; Peace and security cooperation, particularly through collective frameworks to address conflicts and instability; Economic integration and policy coherence under Agenda 2063’s shared development vision; and Institutional governance and continental partnership with global actors.

Deputy Minister for Press and Public Affairs Daniel Sando informed the public at the Ministry of Information’s regular briefing that Liberia’s active participation reflects its continued commitment to multilateral engagement, regional cooperation, and the pursuit of shared African priorities. ‎“Liberia is proud to contribute to discussions that will shape Africa’s direction this year,” Sando said, noting that the summit provides a platform for Liberia to engage with fellow heads of state and key partners on issues including governance, sustainable development, and regional collaboration.

‎Liberia remains engaged in continental leadership efforts through its diplomatic presence in Addis Ababa, reinforcing the country’s commitment to peace, cooperation, and integrated progress across Africa.
‎“The President’s participation affirms Liberia’s belief in a united and prosperous Africa, committed to addressing shared challenges through collective action and strategic partnerships,” Deputy Minister Sando added.
