President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has challenged his Cabinet to remain focused, decisive, and united in confronting Liberia’s security and development challenges, declaring that his administration will not retreat from the fight against drug trafficking despite growing public pressure and criticism.
President Boakai made the remarks today, Thursday, August 13, 2026, while chairing the 23rd Cabinet Meeting at the Executive Mansion in Monrovia, where national security, drug trafficking, border protection, infrastructure development and the rule of law dominated discussions.
The President said government officials entrusted with public responsibilities must remain committed to their duties and avoid being distracted by criticism or public opinions surrounding government decisions.
He urged officials to rely on their expertise, institutional support and knowledge when making decisions in the national interest, emphasizing that effective governance requires collective responsibility and teamwork.
On Liberia’s growing drug-trafficking concerns, Boakai acknowledged the seriousness of the situation but reaffirmed his administration’s determination to keep Liberia drug-free.
He said Liberia is working with neighboring countries and international partners to strengthen efforts against drug trafficking, protect the country’s borders and safeguard Liberia’s international reputation.
“We’re not stopping,” Boakai declared, signaling that the government intends to sustain its campaign despite criticism or attempts to intimidate public officials.
The President also praised Liberia’s security institutions for the risks and sacrifices involved in protecting the country, while stressing that national security must remain a collective priority.
Boakai further emphasized Liberia’s commitment to the rule of law and respect for international obligations, warning that public officials and individuals who act outside the bounds of their responsibilities will face appropriate measures.
He identified border protection as another major security priority, calling for stronger coordination among government agencies responsible for border management and national security.
Beyond security, the Cabinet meeting also addressed infrastructure development and the management of public resources.
President Boakai stressed that funds allocated to development projects must be properly utilized and produce visible results for citizens.
Referencing recent road travel toward Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, the President said improved road accessibility demonstrates progress while acknowledging the work of the Ministry of Public Works, the Road Fund and the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning.
However, he singled out roads around Roberts International Airport as requiring urgent attention and called for a meeting to address the concerns.
Boakai demanded clear timelines for resolving infrastructure challenges, underscoring the need for government agencies to move beyond plans and deliver measurable results.
The President also pointed to progress in healthcare and the timely payment of government employees’ salaries as examples of what can be achieved through coordinated government action.
“This is all what we’ve been praying for and working for, and that’s what it means to have teamwork,” Boakai said.
He praised the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning for its recent General Committee meeting and report, which he said helped inform the public about government programs, activities and achievements.
Boakai also commended officials responsible for organizing Liberia’s 179th Independence Day celebrations, acknowledging the demanding preparations while noting that the events were successfully conducted.
The President cautioned Cabinet members against allowing criticism to derail their responsibilities.
“Nobody here can do it alone, and teamwork is very important,” he said.
He urged officials to sustain the momentum and strengthen coordination, stressing that Liberia’s development challenges require collective action, accountability and persistence.
The 23rd Cabinet Meeting comes as the Boakai administration faces growing public expectations over security, drug trafficking, infrastructure, public services and economic development.
President Boakai opened the meeting with prayers for peace, prosperity and guidance for Liberia, its citizens and national leadership.
