-U.S. Embassy addresses Chargé d’Affaires’ action at Independence Day Celebration

In response to recent events during the Liberian Independence Day Celebration, the United States Embassy says while acknowledging the right to freedom of speech, the Chargé d’Affaires (CDA) Rodriguez exercised her own right to disengage from remarks she found unacceptable.
The U.S. Embassy referenced that both the United States and Liberia share a rich history and a commitment to democratic values. However, during the celebration, the national orator delivered remarks that included divisive rhetoric and unfounded accusations, prompting CDA Rodriguez to take a stand.
“The U.S. has a long-standing commitment to supporting Liberia, providing foreign assistance that exceeds $163 million annually,” the statement read. This support is in addition to contributions made by the U.S. government to various international organizations that aid the Liberian people. Numerous American foundations, private citizens, and non-governmental organizations also actively contribute to the welfare and development of Liberia.
Following the incident, District #6 Representative of Bong County, Moima Briggs Mensah, urged the U.S. Government to recall Charge D’Affairs Catherine Rodriguez for what she sees as her disrespectful actions during Liberia’s independence celebration. Rodriguez walked out during the orator’s speech, which Briggs Mensah believes showed a lack of respect for Liberian leaders, culture, citizens, and values, as well as the three branches of government.
Rep. Briggs Mensah expressed disappointment in Rodriguez’s behavior, stating that it was disrespectful to the country and its people. She emphasized the historical relationship between Liberia and America, noting that Liberians often show respect to American leaders. Walking out during such a significant event was seen as a sign of disrespect.
But in the opinion of the Embassy, Independence Day should be a time for unity and hope, and CDA Rodriguez’s decision to walk out was a considered response to the comments made by the orator.
The United States Embassy reaffirmed its commitment to being a steadfast partner to Liberia, emphasizing the importance of a collaborative relationship grounded in shared values and mutual respect. “We look forward to continuing our work together, now and in the future, for the benefit of both nations,” the statement concluded.
During Liberia’s 177th Independence Day Celebration on Friday, July 26, 2024, the Orator of the event Dr. Robtel Neajai Pailey’s fiery comments on Liberia-U.S. relations flared dissension and led to a walkout by the U.S. Delegation, headed by the Charge of Affairs.
The Orator’s assertion that Liberia has not benefited from its relationship with the United States as it should, struck a nerve with the delegation and prompted their departure from the event. She said, “Truth be told, the United States of America has taken more from us than we have received. Liberia is nobody’s stepchild.”
The United States is Liberia’s biggest ally. This makes Dr. Pailey’s comments all the more significant. Many pundits view her actions as an attempt to undermine the longstanding relationship between the two countries, which has been maintained for decades.
This incident was not the first time tensions arose between Liberian officials and the U.S. Charge De’ Affairs. During a cabinet retreat, the Charge De’ Affairs was speaking on behalf of the diplomatic community when both the President and Vice President walked out of the event.
