MONROVIA, Liberia – The Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) is mourning the loss of its former Nimba County Chairman, Nelson Korquoi, who died on June 9, 2026, in Mao Town, Sanniquellie Mahn District Number Two, following a protracted illness.
The party announced his passing in a statement released Thursday, July 11, 2026, expressing shock and grief over the death of one of its longest-serving and most loyal county leaders.
On behalf of Political Leader and President George M. Weah Sr., National Chairman Atty. Janga A. Kowo, the National Executive Committee, and the entire grassroots movement, the CDC described Korquoi as a steadfast partisan whose leadership left an indelible mark on the party’s structure in Nimba.
Korquoi distinguished himself as the longest-serving chairman of the CDC in Nimba County. He dedicated years of his leadership to the party’s growth with unwavering loyalty and steadfast resolve, the party said. His tenure featured a deep commitment to advancing democratic governance, nurturing the rule of law, and promoting grassroots politics.
Under Korquoi’s visionary leadership, the Coalition for Democratic Change acquired parcels of land and commenced construction of key party infrastructures. These included a sub-office in Small Ganta and the county headquarters in Sanniquellie.
Beyond his party leadership, Korquoi also rendered notable public service. He served as Commerce Head Inspector in Nimba, as Youth Chairman of Nimba County, and as Chairman of the Nimba and Bong Regional Operations. In March 2020, President Weah appointed him Superintendent of Nimba. In that role, he worked with passion and devotion for the welfare of Nimba’s people, spearheading numerous developmental initiatives that left a meaningful imprint on the county.
The CDC extended its deepest sympathies to the resilient people of Nimba County and especially to the Korquoi family.
“In this time of unbearable loss, we urge you to look to the hills from whence cometh your help,” the party stated. “May the Comforter, the God of all flesh, envelop you in peace that surpasses all understanding. Go in peace, Chairman.” The National Secretariat of the Congress for Democratic Change signed the release.
