-Says it poses threats to Liberia’s peace

The former ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) has urged the government to ensure the release of former Executive Protection Service (EPS) personnel who were recently arrested by the Liberia National Police (LNP).

In a recent press statement, the CDC labeled the dismissals, harassment, arrests, brutalization, and torture of former EPS agents as a grave threat to the peace, stability, and security of Liberia. According to the CDC, these aggressive measures by the UP government pose a serious risk to the country’s tranquility and well-being.

The release reads, “These actions by the Unity Party government are a serious threat to the peace, stability, and security of the country. We call for the immediate release of these Liberians who have committed no crimes but served their country in the last several years.”

The coalition has called for the immediate release of the affected Liberians, emphasizing that they have not committed any crimes but have dutifully served their nation in recent years. “In our last communication to the Honorable Speaker and Senate Pro-Temp. we highlighted the severe excesses of the UP regime and called on the National Legislature and the international community to prevail on the UP regime to change course in the interest of peace and stability.”

The CDC government, which assumed office in 2018, in its release claimed to have initiated a national reconciliation process aimed at strengthening and solidifying Liberia’s peace. The statement claims that during their term, no EPS recruit from the UP era was singled out or marginalized. However, the CDC accuses the UP government of escalating its aggressiveness and targeting peaceful citizens.

The Party brags that on January 22, 2024, former President George Manneh Weah and the CDC handed over a stable and peaceful country to the Unity Party. However, they believe things have taken a new trend. The CDC asserts that Liberia had been effectively managed without the presence of international troops, and an election was successfully conducted using domestic resources and security measures.

Howbeit, they expect the Unity Party to uphold and bolster the existing peace, but it accuses the UP government of engaging in irresponsible and reckless actions that threaten the country’s stability. The CDC specifically criticizes the UP government for allegedly targeting peaceful citizens, including motorcyclists, and infringing upon their freedoms and rights.

The former ruling party has also urged the international community to take heed of these alarming developments, as they warned that the early signs of democratic regression, peace erosion, and instability in Liberia should not be overlooked.

“We expect the Unity Party to consolidate and maintain the peace. The irresponsible and reckless activities of the U.P Government are threatening the peace and stability of the country. Targeting peaceful citizens and interfering with the freedoms and rights of peaceful citizens, such as motorcyclists and others is irresponsible,” the release says.

It continues, “The CDC urges the international community to take due note of these early signs of the deterioration of the
hard-won democracy, peace, and stability in Liberia.”
