The Inspector General for Mines and Energy, Agatius Coker, has urged young Liberians to prioritize character, integrity, professionalism and hard work, describing them as the foundation for lasting success and national development.
Speaking today, July 9, 2026 at the Center for the Exchange of Intellectual Opinion (CEIO) on Carey Street in Monrovia, Coker encouraged young people to remain focused on their goals despite life’s challenges, emphasizing that setbacks should not prevent them from pursuing their dreams.
Drawing from his personal journey, Coker recounted how his appointment to public office came through perseverance, faith in God and a commitment to maintaining good character. He said the opportunity marked a historic milestone for his family and reinforced his belief that integrity and consistency open doors to greater opportunities.
The Inspector General cautioned young people against jealousy, deception and unhealthy competition, noting that not everyone will celebrate another person’s success. Instead, he encouraged them to remain humble, stay committed to their values and allow their work to speak for itself.
According to Coker, success is built on what he described as the “three Cs” Character, Connection and Currency. He explained that good character earns trust, trust builds meaningful relationships, and strong relationships often create opportunities that lead to financial success.
He also challenged the notion that academic qualifications alone determine success, stressing that education should be complemented by discipline, practical skills, effective communication and respect for others.
Speaking about his work at the Ministry of Mines and Energy, Coker highlighted ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening governance in Liberia’s mining sector, improving revenue generation, enforcing mining laws and promoting responsible mining practices that benefit both local communities and the country.
He further encouraged young Liberians to seek mentorship, avoid dwelling on past failures and focus on building a brighter future through determination, resilience and continuous self-improvement.
Coker concluded by reminding the audience that while no one can change the past, everyone has the power to shape their future through the choices they make today.
He urged the youth to remain committed to excellence and to contribute positively to Liberia’s growth and development.
