Monrovia – In anticipation of the 2025 World Environment Day, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced a comprehensive lineup of events aimed at promoting environmental awareness and action across Liberia.
The EPA’s activities, which span from May 21 to June 5, are designed to educate and engage communities in the protection and restoration of the environment, with a particular focus on wetlands conservation and plastic pollution.
The program kicks off with a high school quiz competition from May 21 to 24 at the Tumi Compound in Zinnah Hill, ELWA Community. Starting daily at 9:00 AM, the event will bring together 16 high schools in a spirited contest to test their knowledge of environmental issues.
On May 22 and 23, environmental experts will appear on radio and television talk shows to shed light on the importance of wetlands and measures to curb plastic waste. The shows will air on ELBC 99.9 FM and Truth FM 96.1, respectively, from 9:00 to 10:00 AM.
From May 26 to 29, attention will turn to the tertiary education sector with an inter-university environmental debate at the University of Liberia’s main campus. The event aims to empower students to critically examine pressing ecological challenges and propose innovative solutions.
In a call for direct community involvement, the EPA has scheduled a wetland restoration initiative along SKD Boulevard from June 2 to 4, beginning at 8:00 AM. The activity will provide citizens an opportunity to contribute physically to ecosystem revitalization.
The weeklong celebration will climax on June 5—World Environment Day—with a grand parade commencing at the SKD Boulevard junction and ending at Paynesville Town Hall. The day will conclude with an indoor program featuring keynote addresses, presentations, and awards recognizing outstanding contributions to environmental protection.
Mrs. Danise Love Dennis-Dodoo, Head of Media and Corporate Communications at the EPA, urged the public to participate actively in the events. “This celebration is a clarion call for all Liberians to take meaningful action to protect our wetlands and tackle plastic pollution,” she said.
