NIMBA COUNTY — Former Nimba County Superintendent Nelson N. Korquoi has died after a long illness, the county administration said Wednesday. He was appointed by former President George Weah in 2020 and served until 2024.

Korquoi passed away on the night of June 9. No cause of death has been released. The county has declared four days of mourning, with the flag at the Nimba County Administration Building flying at half-mast. The administration described Korquoi as a dedicated public servant and asked the public to avoid disrespectful comments.

Before becoming superintendent, Korquoi worked as Senior Commerce Inspector for Nimba County (2018–2020) and earlier as a sports reporter for Radio Kergheamahn in Ganta and deputy coach for the county football team. The former Nimba County official’s death has since sent a shockwave across Nimba and parts of Liberia. Citizens across Nimba and the County Administration are mourning the passing of the county’s 23rd Superintendent.

In its condolence message, the Office of the Superintendent and the County Administration expressed its profound sadness over the death of the former county leader, describing Korquoi’s passing as a loss of a dedicated public servant.
The Nimba County Administration has urged all citizens to refrain from comments or actions that may bring disrespect to the deceased and his bereaved family.

Also, the Administration called for unity, decency, and compassion as the county grieves. The Office of the Nimba County Superintendent and the County Administration have announced four days of county-level mourning. As a mark of respect, the National Flag at the Nimba County Administration Building will be flown at half-mast for four days in honor of the fallen former county leader.

Meanwhile, news of Superintendent Korquoi’s death has sparked public discussion in Nimba County. Some citizens have linked his passing to the recent General Auditing Commission report on Nimba County.
The GAC’s audit report on Nimba County’s financial activities between July 1, 2018, and December 31, 2023, uncovered widespread irregularities involving more than US$12 million and over L$55 million mismanaged.

The audit covered the County Development Fund (CDF), Social Development Fund (SDF), and county assets. The findings span the tenures of former Superintendents Nelson Korquoi and David Dorr Cooper, as well as the Project Management Committee. In August 2024, Supt. Gono initiated the compliance audit of fiscal years 2018-2023 as a centerpiece of her administration’s push for accountability. At her request, the GAC launched a full review of CDF, SDF, and county assets.
