-Following acid attack by her ex-partner

The Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection (MGCSP) has expressed deep concern over the tragic death of a young woman due to an acid attack by her former partner.

In a recent statement, the Ministry recalled that Ms. Watta Sheriff, 27 years old, succumbed to her injuries after being attacked by her ex-boyfriend, Momoh Kanneh, in Lowah Town, Klay District, Bomi County.

The MGCSP deems the circumstances surrounding Watta Sheriff’s death as distressing and condemned the heinous act that led to the loss of a promising life.

The Ministry extended its condolences to the family, as it views the incident as a setback in the ongoing efforts to combat violence against women, children, and vulnerable individuals.

Despite the widespread public outcry against gender-based violence, the Ministry laments that such atrocious acts persist, claiming the lives of innocent victims.

The Ministry calls on the Ministry of Justice to ensure that the alleged perpetrator is tried in keeping with the Penal Law of the Republic of Liberia, ensuring that the Sheriff’s family gets justice.

Watta Sheriff was assaulted on January 30, 2024, and was initially treated at Tubmanburg Government Hospital before being transferred to Redemption Hospital in New Kru Town, where she tragically passed away.

The Ministry of Gender has reassured its commitment to providing psychosocial assistance and counseling to the bereaved family and closely follow the adjudication of the case.
