On Accusation of witchcraft:

Survivor

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection with aid from the Liberia National Police (LNP), has rescued an 8-year-old ‘burn-survivor’ from the Peace Island Community in Oldest Congo Town, outside Monrovia.

The survivor was accused of being a witch, and was allegedly burned by her grandmother, Kulah Kromah, some five months ago.

Womenvoices has reliably learned that the Ministry of Gender gathered that the survivor was kept in solitude with no access to medical care thereby worsening her condition.

The Ministry has taken custody of the survivor as she’s currently undergoing psychosocial counseling and responding to medical treatment respectively, according to Gender Ministry authorities.

“Gender again cautions the citizenry to refrain from administering trial by ordeal as this is not an authorized path to justice,” indicated a Gender Ministry statement issued late Tuesday.

“We applaud the Liberia National Police for arresting and forwarding to court the alleged perpetrator, Kulah Kromah, and at the same time, assure the public that we will remain fully engaged in pursuing timely justice for the survivor”, Gender, Children and Social Protection Minister Williametta E. Saydee-Tarr stated.

“Gender re-echoes the need for all to pay keen attention to happenings in the communities, and report anything seeming suspicious or as well as negative situations needing attention from different vulnerable groups,” the Gender Ministry statement stressed.
