NIMBA COUNTY, Liberia — The Liberia National Police Nimba County Detachment has arrested and charged 56-year-old Mary Giah with murder for allegedly killing her three grandchildren in Mehnla Town, Nimba County. Suspect Mary Giah was forwarded to the Sanniquellie Magisterial Court on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, where she was issued a writ of arrest, subsequently remanded to Sanniquellie Central Prison pending trial.
Since the case is beyond the magisterial court’s jurisdiction, her trial will proceed at Nimba County’s 8th Judicial Circuit Court during the next term of court.
The tragic incident shocked Mehnla Town on Sunday, February 22, 2026, when Mary Giah allegedly killed her three grandchildren, namely Mewaseh Giah, 6, Marvelous Zainsaye, 4, and 2-year-old Alvina Tokpah.
Detail of Offense:
According to the Liberia National Police charge sheet, Mary Giah was arrested, informed of her constitutional rights, and charged for killing her three grandchildren in a bedroom. The investigation began after police received a tip on February 22, 2026, at 6:00 a.m., about three unconscious bodies found in Mehnla Town, Nimba County. A team of investigators was dispatched to the scene to launch a probe.
At the crime scene, police took photographs, conducted a medical examination, and formed a coroner jury, which reported foul play. Witness statements and evidence led the Liberia National Police to launch an investigation.
Mercy Giah, mother of the deceased children, told police she left her kids with her mother, Mary Giah, on Saturday, February 21, 2026, and went to sleep with her boyfriend, Nelson Looh. She returned home Sunday, February 22, 2026, at 6:00 a.m., and found one of her children, Marvelous Zainsaye, in a pool of blood outside her room door.
Giah informed the police she rushed to check on her other children and found them in a pool of blood with deep cuts on their necks. She raised an alarm, alerting her neighbors for help. Police investigation further revealed that witness Isaac Luogon visited his brother of Paul Giah, husband of the defendant and they slept in Paul’s room.
He was shocked to see the three children in a pool of blood with deep cuts on their necks when Mercy Giah raised an alarm. Paul Giah, husband of Mary Giah, said he and Isaac slept in his room while Mary and the grandchildren slept in Mercy’s room. He woke up Sunday morning to find his grandchildren dead with cuts on their necks, and his wife missing.
Suspect Mary Giah Narration Reveals:
Mary Giah, 56, admitted to killing her three grandchildren, claiming she was driven by a demonic spirit linked to witchcraft. According to police investigations, Giah stated that on February 21, 2026, her daughter, Mercy Giah, left the children with her while she slept with her boyfriend.
Giah confessed to cutting the children’s throats with a knife while they were in bed, alleging her husband and brother-in-law were asleep in the next room. She claimed to have left the knife at the scene and fled into the bush, where she was later arrested by local youths.
The investigation established Giah’s guilt under Chapter 14, Subchapter A, Section 14.1 of Liberia’s statutory law, violating the crime of murder. Giah’s case will proceed through the judicial system.
