Mr. Jarlawah Tonpo
Monrovia, Liberia – The President George Manneh Weah has nominated Jarlawah Tonpo as Deputy Minister for Press and Public Affairs at the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism (MICAT).
According to the Executive Mansion Mr. Tonpo was named early Thursday, June 24, 2021 to replace former Deputy Minister Eugene Fahngon who was relieved of his duties on Wednesday night.
Currently, Mr. Tonpon serves as Director of Press and Public Affairs at the Liberian Senate. He holds Bachelor of Arts degree in Mass Communication and a Master in International Relations (University of Liberia) and a Master candidate in Public Administration at the University of Liberia.
His nomination, which is subject to confirmation by the Liberian Senate, came in barely a day after President Weah relieved with immediate effect Deputy Information Minister for Press and Public Affairs at the Ministry of Information Culture and Tourism (MICAT), Eugene Fahngon of his post.
According to Executive Mansion release, Mr. Fahngon’s removal is as a result of spreading false information regarding the government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic currently ravaging the country.
Mr. Eugene Fahngon is heard on a recorder criticizing Government for its reluctance to lockdown the Country amidst second wave of COVID-19 outbreak has taken several lives away in the Country. The former government official said delay in taking appropriate actions could lead to more deaths in the Country. Mr. Fahngon said government‘s deliberate action is due to economic reason.
The President has warned that he will not hesitate to take similar action against any other official of government engaged in activities that undermine established government policy.
