NIMBA COUNTY — The Liberia National Police Nimba Detachment says it has investigated, charged, and sent to court PSU Patrolman Jeremiah Tarpkor for the commission of the crime manslaughter after two of its officers fought over a chicken foot in Karnplay City, Nimba County.

Speaking to the media over the weekend, Emmanuel Gruesia, the County Commander of the Crime Services Division of the Liberia National Police Nimba Detachment, said its preliminary investigation charged officer Jeremiah Tarkpor with manslaughter and is being remanded to the Sanniquellie Central Prison awaiting court trial.

Manslaughter is the unlawful killing of a person without the intent to kill or cause serious harm. It is a second-degree felony under the Liberian law. Mr. Gruesia said that PSU Patrolman Jeremiah Tarpkor caused severe spinal cord injury to his colleague Elton Bahn, which later led to his death.

The October 22, 2024 incident, which led to the injury of one of the officers, Elton Bahn, who later died at the John F. Kennedy Hospital, happened when both officers had gone to eat at a local food center (cookshop). According to Gruesia, Patrolman Elton Bahn died from a severe spinal cord injury sustained following a strange fight with his fellow police officer over a piece of chicken foot in Karnplay City, Nimba County, recently.

He revealed that the incident reportedly began with a heated exchange between Officer Elton Bahn and PSU Patrolman Jeremiah Takpor, escalating into a physical struggle that left Bahn with a severe spinal cord injury.

He further noted that the incident happened when Bahn questioned Takpor about his greedy eating during a shared meal.

In the confrontation, Gruesia stressed that both men reportedly engaged in a very ghastly fight over a single chicken foot, leaving Bahn seriously injured in Karnplay City. The action led to insults and violent struggle, resulting in Elton Bahn suffering a broken spinal cord injury, the CSD Nimba County Commander stated.

He added that following the fight, Bahn was immediately rushed to the John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Monrovia for medical treatment, where he was pronounced dead.

Following the severe incident, PSU Officer Jeremiah Tapkor was immediately taken to the Liberia National Police Headquarters in Monrovia for investigation.

He, however, warned officers of the LNP to refrain from unethical practices that will undermine the credibility and values of the profession, admonishing them to conduct themselves professionally in promoting the image of the credible institution positively to outsiders.
