Monrovia: The Monrovia City Corporation (MCC) has begun cleanup and rehabilitation efforts at the historic Palm Grove Cemetery as part of preparations for Liberia’s 179th Independence Day celebration.
On Friday, Monrovia City Mayor John-Charuk Siafa inspected the ongoing works at the cemetery, located on Center Street in central Monrovia, and reaffirmed the City Government’s commitment to restoring the site’s historical significance.
Palm Grove Cemetery, one of Liberia’s oldest burial grounds, serves as the final resting place for several prominent statesmen, national heroes, and early political leaders. However, years of neglect resulted in the cemetery becoming overwhelmed by waste, overgrown vegetation, and illegal activities, including occupation by disadvantaged youths.
The ongoing cleanup involves the removal of overgrown grass, accumulated garbage, fallen tree branches, blocked drainage systems, and debris covering graves and walkways. The exercise is aimed at restoring dignity to the cemetery ahead of the Independence Day period, when families and visitors traditionally pay tribute to their loved ones and national figures buried there.
Mayor Siafa said the MCC remains committed to transforming Palm Grove Cemetery into a clean and protected heritage site. He disclosed that plans are underway for a comprehensive grave audit, the construction of a perimeter fence, and the gradual relocation of individuals occupying the cemetery through a humane and coordinated approach.
During the visit, the Mayor engaged disadvantaged youths living at the cemetery, who expressed willingness to support the transformation process while calling for rehabilitation opportunities. Mayor Siafa assured them that the City Government would work with relevant partners to explore pathways for their reintegration and provide support, including medication and other essential items during the Independence celebration.
The MCC’s intervention at Palm Grove Cemetery forms part of its broader agenda to preserve Liberia’s national heritage, improve urban sanitation, and promote a cleaner, safer, and more dignified Monrovia.
