By Jerromie S. Walters
House Speaker J. Fonati Koffa has disclosed his intention to resolve the ongoing crisis within the legislature through constructive dialogue with the aggrieved lawmakers. This commitment follows a recent intervention by the U.S. Ambassador, who engaged with the Speaker to address the situation.
In a brief engagement with the media on Monday, October 21, 2024, at his Capitol Hill office, Speaker Koffa expressed his determination to meet with the disenchanted lawmakers today. He acknowledged the public’s concerns and apologized for the troubling events that transpired at the Capitol last Thursday.
Speaker Koffa emphasized the importance of negotiation over confrontation, highlighting his belief that open communication is essential for moving forward and restoring harmony within the legislature.
Unbending in their quest:
During a press conference on Sunday, October 20, 2024, the opposition bloc to Koffa’s leadership emphasized that their decision remains unbending and is backed by what they described as his (Speaker Koffa’s) failure to discharge his official duties in a manner that is fair, proper and impartial.
A vivid representation of lawmakers from the House of Representatives present during the press conference displayed an attendance of 38 legislators. The bloc claimed that it currently has 42 members. They have also called for investigation into report of bribery in the process.
According to Chapter Five, Article 49 of the 1986 Constitution of the Republic of Liberia, the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and other elected officers can be removed from office for cause by a resolution supported by a two-thirds majority of the House members.
