NIMBA COUNTY, Liberia — The local government of Nimba County, headed by the county’s Superintendent, Kou Meapeh Gono, on Thursday officially opened and signed a Book of Condolence in honor of the late former Nimba County Superintendent, Nelson N. Korquoi.
The solemn ceremony took place at Tubman Hall in Sanniquellie City, Nimba County, and brought together an array of county stakeholders, including local government officials, traditional chiefs and elders, members of the religious community, family members of the late Korquoi, as well as prominent sons and daughters of Nimba County.
The gathering served as a moment of reflection and tribute to the life and service of the late former superintendent, whose contributions to the county and its people were remembered and celebrated by attendees.
Speaking during the ceremony, current Nimba County Superintendent Kou Meapeh Gono emphasized the importance of preserving the legacy of individuals who dedicated themselves to public service and community development. She described the opening of the Book of Condolence as a symbolic gesture of respect and appreciation for the late Korquoi’s leadership and commitment to the growth and progress of Nimba County.
Members of the public and invited guests were given the opportunity to sign the Book of Condolence and write messages expressing sympathy to the bereaved family while paying tribute to the late former county official.
Traditional leaders, religious figures, and members of the community also reflected on Korquoi’s life, describing him as a devoted servant of the people whose efforts helped strengthen local governance and community engagement during his time in public service.
The event further highlighted the unity and shared sense of loss among residents and leaders of Nimba County, many of whom gathered not only to mourn his passing but also to celebrate the impact he made throughout his years of service.
The Book of Condolence is expected to remain open for additional mourners and well-wishers who wish to pay their respects and offer heartfelt messages to the family of the late former superintendent.
The ceremony marks a the commencement of a funeral ceremony and burial scheduled Saturday, July 4, 2026 in Gompa (Ganta) City, Nimba County.
Former Nimba County Superintendent Nelson N. Korquoi died on the night of June 9, 2026, after a protracted illness.
Superintendent Nelson Korquoi served as the County’s 23rd Superintendent since it gained county status in 1964.
He was appointed Superintendent of Nimba County by former President George Manneh Weah in 2020. He replaced former Superintendent D. Dorr Cooper and served the people of Nimba County for three years until he was replaced in May 2024 by the current Superintendent of the county, Kou Meapeh Gono.
Before he was appointed Superintendent of Nimba County, Honorable Korquoi served the Liberian government as Senior Commerce Inspector of Nimba County from 2018 to 2020.
Before entering government, Korquoi held several social leadership positions, including Deputy Coach for the Nimba County football team for several years. He also had a sitting in the Liberian media community when he served as Sports Reporter for Radio Kergheamahn in Ganta, Nimba County.
His death marked the end of an era of a dedicated public servant.
The death of the former Nimba County official sent shockwaves across Nimba County and other parts of Liberia, as citizens and local authorities continue to mourn his passing.
Residents across the county, along with the Nimba County Administration, have expressed deep sorrow over the death of the county’s 23rd Superintendent, extending heartfelt sympathy and condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult period.
In its condolence message, the Office of the Superintendent and the Nimba County Administration expressed profound sadness over the passing of the former county leader, describing his death as a significant loss and remembering him as a dedicated public servant who contributed to the growth and development of Nimba County.
As a mark of respect and honor for his service to the county and nation, the National Flag at the Nimba County Administration Building and all public areas in the county will be flown at half-mast in memory of the late former county leader.
