In a gesture reflecting deep respect and solidarity, Hon. Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa, the Speaker of the 55th National Legislature of the House of Representatives, led a delegation of lawmakers to the Vatican Embassy in Monrovia Thursday, to sign a Book of Condolence for the late Pope Francis.
This visit served as an expression of heartfelt sympathy from the 55th National Legislature and the people of Liberia in response to the Pope’s passing.
Upon arrival at the Vatican Embassy, Koffa and his colleagues were received by the staff and diplomats who conveyed their appreciation for the lawmakers’ visit.
The Speaker, speaking to reporters after signing the Book of Condolence, expressed that the loss of Pope Francis is felt not only by Catholics but by people of all faiths around the world. “Pope Francis was an emblem of hope, peace, and unity, always advocating for the marginalized and voicing the concerns of the voiceless,” Koffa stated.
“His commitment to promoting interfaith dialogue and understanding has inspired many. Today, we unite in our grief and extend our heartfelt condolences not only on behalf of the 55th Legislature but also on behalf of the people of Liberia.”
The delegation, comprising several lawmakers across various political affiliations, highlighted the significance of the Pope’s global role in fostering peace and reconciliation. They emphasized the importance of continuing his legacy by promoting unity and compassion within their own communities.
The Vatican Embassy acknowledged the visit, expressing gratitude for the respect shown by the Liberian lawmakers. “This gesture demonstrates a profound respect for the Pope and a commitment to uphold his values,” said one embassy official.
“The solidarity of Liberia’s leadership in this moment is indeed appreciated.”
The Book of Condolence at the Vatican Embassy will remain open for members of the public who wish to pay their respects and honor the legacy of Pope Francis.
