MONROVIA, Liberia — President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has broken ground for the development of Providence Island, signaling the government’s renewed efforts to transform the historic site into a major tourism destination.
The project, being advanced through the Liberia National Tourism Authority (LNTA), is expected to preserve Providence Island’s historical importance while introducing modern facilities and a structured tourism experience.
President Boakai said the development of the island is an important component of his administration’s efforts to reposition Liberia’s tourism sector under the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development.
The groundbreaking marks a significant step toward the implementation of the island’s Design and Build Project, which seeks to connect Liberia’s historical heritage with its growing tourism industry.
Following the ceremony, Minister of State for Presidential Affairs Hon. Samuel A. Stevquoah, Director-General of the Cabinet Hon. Nathaniel T. Kwabo, LNTA Board Chairman Amb. Christopher Hayes Onanuga, and LNTA Director-General Hon. Princess Eva Cooper toured Providence Island as preparations for the project continue.
The officials assessed the site and reviewed preparations aimed at ensuring that the development maintains the island’s historical character while creating an attractive destination for local and international visitors.
The LNTA says the project is designed to promote Liberia’s cultural heritage, expand tourism opportunities, create economic benefits, and strengthen the country’s position as a destination for historical and cultural tourism.
Providence Island remains one of Liberia’s most important historical landmarks, and its planned redevelopment is expected to provide visitors with a deeper understanding of the country’s history while contributing to the growth of the tourism sector.
Government officials say the initiative reflects their commitment to using Liberia’s historical and cultural assets to support national development and generate new opportunities within the tourism economy.
