Acting Public Works Minister Mrs. Ruth Coker-Collins has announced that the Works Ministry will this Sunday begin demolition exercises at the densely populated Red Light commercial hub, to make way for ongoing road construction works.
Government of Liberia is currently undertaking the upgrading and modernization of the stretch of road from Coca-Cola Factory to Red Light General Market , and from Red Light to ELWA Junction.
The stretch from Coca-Cola Factory to Red Light General Market being the first phase while Red Light to ELWA Junction, the second phase.
Acting Minister Coker-Collins urged marketers at the Red Light commercial hub to move to the designated market located in the Omega Community by the end of this week.
According to Minister Coker-Collins, the removal of the marketers from the Red Light commercial hub will allow the Works Ministry and its contractors to commence road construction works in that corridor.
She told state radio Thursday that road construction works within the Red Light vicinity has been stalled due to the congestion of the area by marketers; something she said government is not going to continue to allow and take lightly.
“A massive four lane road with an overhead pathway will be erected to ease movement in a belt that has for sometimes been impassible,” she said.
However, Minister Coker-Collins expressed the hope that marketers at the Red Light commercial hub and members of the general public will adhere to the request to vacate the area, stressing that development comes with challenges at times.
She emphasize that at the end of it all, Liberians will appreciate the great efforts of the government.
She disclosed that the Ministry of Public Works is currently carrying on work in the designated Omega Market area, clearing the place for the construction of additional warehouses and making way for road connectivity for accessibility.
