-NPHIL Urges As Liberia Active Mpox Cases Increase to 69

MONROVIA – The National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) has confirmed the country’s active Mpox cases have risen to sixty-nine, while reassuring the public that no deaths have been recorded as of May 31, 2025. The health authority issued a strong advisory urging Liberians to avoid large gatherings and maintain strict hygiene practices as part of containment measures against the viral disease.

The newly confirmed cases were identified through testing conducted at the National Reference Laboratory, with genomic sequencing revealing the presence of two infectious strains of the Monkeypox virus – Clade IIa and Clade IIb – which health officials confirm are currently circulating in Liberia and neighboring countries. Mpox, which causes distinctive pus-filled rashes, spreads through close personal contact, contaminated surfaces, and respiratory droplets during prolonged face-to-face interaction.

In response to the developing situation, NPHIL has advised the public to exercise heightened precautions to prevent further community transmission. Health authorities specifically cautioned against close contact with individuals displaying symptoms such as skin rashes or flu-like signs, while emphasizing the importance of regular hand washing and use of sanitizers. The institute further recommended practicing safe sexual behaviors and immediate reporting of any suspected cases to medical professionals.

Notably, NPHIL has called on institutions and organizations across Liberia to implement measures reducing large public gatherings as a preventive step. The advisory extends to businesses, offices, educational institutions, and places of worship, which are now expected to provide adequate hand-washing facilities. Transportation operators have also been alerted to avoid vehicle overcrowding, with the Ministry of Transport set to issue specific guidelines on passenger limits in the coming days.

The Liberian government, through NPHIL and in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and international partners, maintains that the country’s health system remains prepared to handle the outbreak. Officials highlighted Liberia’s previous experience in managing public health emergencies while assuring citizens that all necessary measures are being taken to safeguard population health. Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have urged the public to remain calm but vigilant, adhering to all recommended safety protocols while staying informed through official government communication channels.
