Nimba County District #7 Representative Musa Hassan Bility has painted a vivid picture of the potential chaos that could ensue if the foundational principles of law and governance are undermined in Liberia.
In a Facebook post, Bility emphasized the critical role of the three branches of government—the Executive, Legislative, and Judiciary—in maintaining a balanced system designed to serve the people. He underscored the importance of the Supreme Court, which stands as the apex of justice, with its five esteemed justices tasked with interpreting the Constitution and upholding the rule of law.
However, Bility expressed deep concern over a hypothetical scenario that threatens this delicate equilibrium. “Imagine a situation where three justices, believing they represent the majority, step outside the court’s chamber to form their faction, claiming authority over the institution,” he warned. “Such an act would not only undermine the integrity of the judiciary but also render it lawless.”
The Representative further illustrated a troubling vision of a Cabinet that abandons the President, the head of state, to rally around the Vice President. “What if they unilaterally declared the President unfit and seized power without due process? This would be a coup from within, a dangerous precedent that could destabilize our nation,” Bility cautioned.
He also highlighted the threat posed by a Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives who might gather a faction of members to convene a rogue session, dismissing the Speaker in absentia and conducting an illegitimate election to claim authority over the House. “The implications of such actions would be catastrophic for our democracy,” he stated.
Representative Bility urged the public to consider the motives behind these potential upheavals and the disregard for the institutions that hold the country together. “If these individuals succeed, they set dangerous precedents that could plunge our nation into chaos,” he warned, raising critical questions about the future of justice, democracy, and the trust of the people in their leaders.
Yet, amidst this grim outlook, Bility called for a different vision—one that champions the rule of law and resolves disputes through legitimate channels. “Let us imagine a future where our institutions are preserved, where unity, accountability, and respect for governance flourish,” he urged. “Let us not only imagine the dangers of lawlessness but also the strength that comes from unity and respect for our democratic institutions,” he concluded.
