Bong County Electoral District #6 Representative and a prominent member of the Women’s Legislative Caucus of Liberia, Hon. Moima Briggs-Mensah, has made a compelling case for advancing women’s political participation and leadership across West Africa during the Women’s Political Leadership Forum (West Africa) held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja, Nigeria.
The two-day regional forum, held from July 30โ31, 2026, convened women leaders, policymakers, parliamentarians, civil society organizations, development partners, and governance advocates under the theme: “Accelerating Gender Parity in Political Leadership in West Africa: From Commitments to Action.”
Addressing participants, Hon. Briggs-Mensah underscored the urgent need for governments, political institutions, and stakeholders across the sub-region to move beyond policy declarations and translate long-standing commitments on gender equality into concrete actions that expand women’s representation in political leadership and decision-making.
She emphasized that while significant strides have been made in promoting women’s rights and political participation, much remains to be done to dismantle structural, cultural, and financial barriers that continue to hinder women from fully participating in governance.
Drawing on Liberia’s democratic journey, Hon. Briggs-Mensah highlighted the important role of women legislators in championing inclusive legislation, advocating for gender-responsive policies, and promoting the empowerment of women and girls. She called for stronger regional collaboration, mentorship programs, and sustained investment in women’s political leadership to ensure greater representation at all levels of government.
“The time has come for West Africa to move from commitments to measurable action. Women’s equal participation in political leadership is not merely a matter of fairnessโit is essential for sustainable development, inclusive governance, and stronger democracies,” she noted.
Hon. Briggs-Mensah also encouraged political parties to adopt more inclusive nomination processes, support female candidates, and create enabling environments that allow women to compete fairly in elections.
The Women’s Political Leadership Forum serves as a strategic platform for dialogue, experience-sharing, and the development of actionable strategies aimed at accelerating gender parity in political leadership across the West African region.
Her participation reflects Liberia’s continued commitment to promoting women’s leadership and strengthening democratic governance while advancing the objectives of the Women’s Legislative Caucus of Liberia and the country’s broader gender equality agenda.
