Monrovia- In what seems to be a contradiction to his campaign promises, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has appointed former Senegal international footballer Alieu Kebe as Liberia’s new Sports Ambassador at large, a move that has ignited a storm of criticism and skepticism regarding his commitment of appointing qualify Liberians in public service.

Kebe’s appointment has raised eyebrows because he is not a Liberian.

Critics argued that appointing such a man, is a slap in the face of Liberian sports administrators.

One of President Boakai’s central campaign pledges was to think Liberia and build Liberia, but many are questioning whether the appointment of Kebe is counterproductive to that goal.

A letter posted on the official website of the Executive Mansion confirmed Alieu Kebe appointment on April 10, 2024 to said high ranking international position.

Speaking to journalists in Monrovia Tuesday, April 23, 2024, the President of Liberia Football Association Upper Women’s League team Senior Female Professionals, Emmett Stages Glassco said the appointment of Mr. Kebe is an open statement that the president doesn’t believe in Liberian sports administrators and those that once represented the country internationally.

“I am wondering why such a person should be accommodated in our government when there are more competent Liberians with international connections” he angrily told journalists.

It is disheartening to see individuals who have done nothing to see our sports move forward

being appointed to significant roles, while dedicated individuals who struggled to fly our flag internationally remain unrecognized. I believed this appointment should be reconsidered or revoked by President Boakai”, Glassco stressed.

” I am expressing strong objections to this appointment to prevent any embarrassment to the sporting populace of Liberia . This decision is a grief mistake by the President, as this individual have contributed nothing to the improve of our sports sector and moreover , he is from another country” he explained.

While expressing his frustration, the Liberians sports enthusiast called on President Boakai to do the needful by appointing qualified Liberians with sports knowledge to the sector.
