As the 55th legislature of the Republic of Liberia heads to the polls today, Monday, January 15, 2024,  to elect its new Speaker, Senate Pro tempore, and Deputy Speaker, our legislators need to seize this opportunity to not only bring about positive change but also embrace gender equality. In taking this step forward, we encourage all legislators to stand with the women and vote for Senator Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence as the Senate Pro tempore and Representative Moima Briggs Mensah as Deputy Speaker.

Liberia has long championed itself as a democratic nation striving for equality and justice. However, there is still much work to be done to alleviate the underrepresentation of women in positions of power. By electing Senator Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence as the Senate Pro tempore and Representative Moima Briggs Mensah as Deputy Speaker, Liberia has a historic opportunity to break down these gender barriers that have hindered the political landscape for far too long, especially for the Deputy Speakership.

Not just because they are women, but because they are competent enough to serve. It is about time the voices of capable and experienced women, like Senator Lawrence and Representative Mensah who have tirelessly fought for change, are elevated to decision-making positions in our legislature.

As those who follow the legislature know, both Senator Lawrence and Representative Mensah have proven themselves as outstanding and dedicated public servants, with a track record of putting the interests of Liberia and its citizens above all else.

Senator Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence has proven herself as an exceptional leader through her extensive legislative experience and unwavering commitment to the people of Liberia. Her tenure as a senator has been marked by a strong track record of advocating for social justice, gender equality, and economic development. With her deep understanding of the legislative process and her ability to build consensus, Senator Lawrence is well-equipped to effectively lead the Senate and ensure that the voices of all Liberians are heard.

Similarly, Representative Moima Briggs Mensah has demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities during her tenure as a representative. Her dedication to grassroots development, education, and women’s empowerment showcases her commitment to uplifting marginalized communities. As Deputy Speaker, she will bring fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to the table, fostering an environment of inclusivity and progress.

As they (Nyonblee and Moima) too have always said, the importance of diverse perspectives in decision-making cannot be overstated. Elevating women to key leadership positions in the legislature will ensure that the concerns and interests of women are taken seriously, as they understand women’s situations.

Women, like both lawmakers bring distinct experiences and priorities to the table, making their presence essential in shaping policies that address a broad range of issues. By electing Senator Lawrence and Representative Mensah, the 55th legislature can make significant strides toward more inclusive governance and ensure no voices are left unheard.

As Liberia stands at the precipice of a new era, it is crucial to seize this opportunity to promote gender equality and empower women in positions of leadership. By voting Senator Nyonblee Karnga Lawrence as the Senate Pro tempore and Representative Moima Briggs Mensah as Deputy Speaker, the legislators can pave the way for a brighter future for Liberia.

Let this election be a resounding testament to our nation’s progress and the power of women in shaping policies that will lead us toward a prosperous and inclusive Liberia.
