In an effort to address the rising prevalence of cyber crimes, several  students have participated in an intensive awareness program focused on understanding and combating cyber threats. This initiative aims to equip young individuals with the knowledge and skills necessary to navigate the digital landscape safely.

The program features presentations, and hands-on activities that emphasize the significance of cybersecurity. Participants learned about various cyber threats, including phishing, malware, and data breaches, as well as effective strategies for risk mitigation.

Organizers stressed the importance of fostering a culture of cybersecurity awareness among students to create a safer online environment. By empowering the next generation with the right tools and insights, this initiative seeks to build a proactive community prepared to confront cyber challenges effectively..

The event took place at BlueCrest University in Congo Town on October 10, 2024, bringing together a diverse group of guests, including representatives from LINSU, Hope Tech Inc, CYGEC, IGTS Africa, and students from UMU, AIIST, FMCA, Haywood Mission, among others.

Providing the introduction to the program, DMG HR Florence Gaye noted that the symposium is held in commemoration of Cybersecurity Month, celebrated each October. This global initiative aims to educate individuals and raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity.

“This is to protect our personal information while we navigate the digital world responsibly,” she said, underlining the initiative’s commitment to promoting safe online practices.

In his speech, Chief Executive Officer of Uhuru Tech Solutions, Foldestine Paye, emphasized the government’s vital role in fostering cybersecurity. He stated, “We need a robust legislation to combat cyber crimes,” highlighting the necessity of legal frameworks to address these challenges effectively. Payestressed that collaboration between public and private sectors is crucial for developing comprehensive strategies to combat cyber threats.

Mr. Paye acknowledged the youth as leaders of tomorrow, noting their profound engagement with technology. He stressed that cyber threats are real, stating, from identity theft and cyberbullying to scams and misinformation, the dangers are numerous. He emphasized the importance of educating themselves about these risks and knowing how to protect personal information. 

The Chief Executive urged them to use strong, unique passwords, think before you share, and always question the validity of online sources. Remember, once information is shared online, it can be challenging to retract.

Additionally, he addressed the government directly, to play a vital role in fostering a safe digital environment is vital. Invest in cybersecurity education, ensuring that both youth and adults are equipped with the knowledge to navigate the digital landscape safely. Establishing partnerships with educational institutions, technology companies, and international organizations can help us develop effective training programs.

Representing the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA), Cllr. T. Emmanuel Tomah announced that the LTA is partnering with the National Identification Registry (NIR) on SIM card registration to better track cyber activities in the country. This collaboration aims to enhance accountability and security in the telecommunications sector.

Furthermore, Tomah informed the occasion that Liberia has, in line with international protocols and treaties, adapted a supplementary act as a framework for the governance of cyberspace. This approach would ensure that the country’s cybersecurity policies are aligned with global standards and best practices.

He encouraged participants to  be good citizens as they navigate the internet, reminding them of their responsibility in fostering a safe online community.
