GANTA CITY, Nimba County โ€” A 66-year-old retired educator, James K. Doe, has died after reportedly falling from a narrow wooden footbridge into a nearby waterway in the Catholic Community in Ganta City, Nimba County.

Mr. Doe, a respected classroom teacher who devoted decades of his life to educating young Liberians, was widely admired for his commitment to academic excellence, discipline, and mentorship. Throughout his distinguished career, he taught at Ganta YMCA High School, Yini High School, and several other educational institutions in Ganta, helping to shape the lives and futures of countless students.

According to family members, Mr. Doe left his home on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, but failed to return, prompting concern among relatives. After several hours without any communication, family members, friends, and community residents launched a search.

His stepson, Eric Yeanay, said the search ended in tragedy when Mr. Doe’s lifeless body was discovered in the water beneath the wooden footbridge.

Yeanay disclosed that the deceased had struggled with excessive alcohol consumption, which the family believes may have contributed to the unfortunate incident. However, he emphasized that the exact circumstances surrounding Mr. Doe’s death have yet to be officially determined.

Preliminary findings by investigators indicate that there is currently no evidence of foul play. Initial examinations suggest that Mr. Doe’s death was accidental and likely resulted from an unintended fall from the footbridge into the waterway.

The Liberia National Police (LNP) says the investigation remains active to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident and to formally determine the cause of death.

Police authorities said additional inquiries are being conducted as part of standard investigative procedures. A final investigative report is expected once all relevant evidence has been reviewed.

The news of Mr. Doe’s death has cast a shadow of grief over the Ganta community, where he was regarded as an accomplished educator and mentor whose years of dedicated service positively impacted generations of students. Former colleagues, students, friends, community leaders, and residents have continued to remember him for his professionalism, integrity, and unwavering commitment to advancing education.

Many described him as a humble and compassionate teacher who inspired young people both inside and outside the classroom, leaving behind a legacy of knowledge, discipline, and public service that will long be remembered by those whose lives he touched.

Meanwhile, the Ganta City Corporation has extended its heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, describing Mr. Doe’s passing as a profound loss not only to his family but also to the city and Liberia’s education sector.

In its condolence message, the Corporation expressed profound sympathy to the family, friends, former students, and loved ones of the late educator, praying that they find strength, comfort, and solace during this difficult period.
