-Gbarpolu Senator-Elect Amara Konneh tells his people

In the aftermath of a highly contested campaign that saw heated exchanges and fierce competition, former Finance Minister, Amara Mohammed Konneh emerged victorious as the Senator-elect of this western County.

He was declared as winner by the National Elections Commission (NEC Liberia) boss, Honorable Davidetta Browne Lansanah on October 15, 2023, at the general elections daily press briefing in Monrovia. She said that Amara Konneh obtained 11,651 or 31.1% valid votes against his closer candidate Alfred Koiwood who got 9,303 or 24.9% valid votes.

In his victory press conference earlier this week (October 16, 2023) in Bopolu City, Mr. Konneh extended an olive branch to all tribes and pledged to reconcile the county, fostering unity among its diverse communities.

He said, “Regardless of our tribe, we must come together, hand in hand, to build a stronger and more prosperous future for our beloved county and country.”

One of the key pillars of Konneh’s campaign was his commitment to education.

Recognizing the invaluable role of teachers in shaping the minds of Gbarpolu’s youth, he revealed his intention to champion the cause of volunteer teachers. He pledged to advocate for the allocation of a significant portion of the national budget to support these dedicated educators, ensuring they receive the recognition and compensation they deserve.

In addition to his focus on education, Mr. Amara_Konneh stressed the importance of collaboration with fellow lawmakers to transform campaign promises into tangible results for Gbarpolu County. He vowed to work hand in hand with his colleagues in the legislature to develop and implement a comprehensive Gbarpolu Development Agenda.

“As elected Senator, we have a responsibility to utilize the county development funds in the best interest of our people,” Mr. Konneh affirmed.

The Gbarpolu Senator-elect added: “Through strategic planning and effective governance, we will channel these resources towards initiatives that uplift our communities, create job opportunities, improve infrastructure, and enhance the overall quality of life in Gbarpolu County.”

Recognizing the deplorable state of school structures and their detrimental impact on the quality of education, the former Liberia Planning Minister has made it a priority to revamp the physical appearance of schools throughout the county.

He envisions a comprehensive overhaul that includes repairing dilapidated buildings, providing adequate furniture and learning materials, and creating a conducive environment for students to thrive academically.

“Education is the bedrock of our society,” Konneh emphasized. “Our children deserve schools that inspire and motivate them to excel. By investing in the improvement of school infrastructure, we are investing in the future of Gbarpolu County.”

Additionally, the Senator-elect has identified the dire state of roads as a significant hindrance to economic growth and social connectivity.

He pledged to advocate for increased funding and strategic planning to address the issue, promising to work closely with the relevant government agencies and stakeholders to ensure that road networks are rehabilitated and expanded.

In the realm of healthcare, Konneh aims to tackle the limited supply of essential drugs and the shortage of nurses in Gbarpolu County.

He plans to engage in advocacy at the Senate and at the same time work with healthcare professionals and collaborate with the Ministry of Health, Republic of Liberia to enhance the availability of medications and attract qualified nurses to the region. Konneh believes that accessible and quality healthcare is a fundamental right for all citizens of Gbarpolu County.

Moreover, the Senator-elect envisions transforming Emirates_Hospital into a regional hospital for Gbarpolu County. Recognizing the need for improved medical facilities and services, Konneh plans to leverage the Western Region legislative caucuses to secure the necessary resources and support. The establishment of a regional hospital would provide specialized medical care and alleviate the burden on the existing healthcare infrastructure according to him.

Interestingly, in a bid to bolster education in the region, the former Finance Minister wished-for for a Western_Liberia_University in Bomi County, with satellite colleges in Gbarpolu and Cape Mount.

This initiative, facilitated by the Western Region legislative caucuses, would ensure that the youth of Gbarpolu_County have access to higher education opportunities closer to home. It would not only enhance educational attainment but also contribute to local economic development by providing skilled professionals to support various sectors.

Konneh_Economic_Empowerment_Initiatives

Recognizing the importance of reliable electricity for business development and job creation, Konneh has prioritized connecting Gbarpolu County to the electricity grid of neighboring Bomi County. By bridging the electricity gap, he intends to attract investors and stimulate economic activities within Gbarpolu.

The provision of electricity will not only enhance the living standards of the residents but also create opportunities for entrepreneurship, leading to job creation and overall economic growth in the region.

Furthermore, Honorable Konneh sees great potential in cash crop cultivation, particularly cocoa, as a means to boost the agricultural sector and improve the livelihoods of the people of Gbarpolu County.

Konneh plans to implement initiatives that promote and support cocoa farming in each of the county’s six districts. By providing farmers with training, access to quality 1 million seeds, and market linkages, he aims to establish Gbarpolu County as a key player in the cocoa industry, generating income and employment opportunities for the local population.

In a bid to promote financial inclusion and empower women, Konneh has devised a plan to support the MC2 Bank in Bopolu City. With a specific focus on women’s financial empowerment, the initiative aims to provide access to financial services, including savings accounts, credit facilities, and financial literacy programs.

By enhancing women’s financial capabilities, Konneh seeks to empower them to become entrepreneurs, invest in their businesses, and contribute to the economic growth of Gbarpolu County.

“Women are the backbone of our communities, and their economic empowerment is crucial for the overall development of Gbarpolu County,” Konneh emphasized. “Through women’s financial inclusion support through the Rural Community Financial Institute, [MC2 Bank], we aim to break barriers and ensure that women have the necessary tools and resources to thrive economically.”

Meanwhile, in a public address to the people of Gbarpolu, Konneh acknowledged the anticipation and excitement surrounding the election results. He urged the people of Gbarpolu County to maintain faith in the democratic process and respect the decisions made by Liberians and the NEC.

“I understand the eagerness and emotions that accompany this crucial stage of our electoral journey,” Konneh expressed with conviction. “I call on all of you, my fellow citizens of Gbarpolu, to remain calm, patient, and united. Let us demonstrate our commitment to democracy and respect for the electoral process.”

Mr. Konneh emphasized the importance of unity and solidarity during this time, irrespective of political affiliations or personal preferences.

He encouraged the people of Gbarpolu to rise above divisions and work together towards a common goal of progress and development for the County.
