-Supreme Court Overturns Kaiser Murder Conviction, Orders Immediate Release
MONROVIA, Liberia — More than three years after the brutal stabbing death of 18-year-old Fatu Blasuwoah, the question of who killed her remains unanswered. The Supreme Court of Liberia on Friday overturned the murder conviction and life sentence of Valington B. Kaiser, popularly known as “Bishop,” ordering his immediate release from custody and the restoration of his civil rights.
Kaiser had been convicted in connection with Blasuwoah’s 2022 death, her body discovered with multiple stab wounds at the old LPRC compound in Gardnerville. He was arrested shortly after police said CCTV footage and a green-handled knife linked him to the killing. Prosecutors presented six witnesses during his trial at Criminal Court “A,” relying heavily on surveillance video and forensic evidence.
The defense countered with its own witnesses, including Kaiser, who denied any involvement. On March 1, 2023, a 12-member jury found him guilty of murder. Eight days later, Judge Roosevelt Z. Willie sentenced him to life imprisonment after denying a motion for a new trial.
But in a unanimous decision delivered Friday, the Supreme Court identified serious contradictions in both the CCTV footage and the forensic examination of the alleged murder weapon. Those inconsistencies, the Court ruled, created reasonable doubt about Kaiser’s guilt—a threshold that undermines any criminal conviction.
Delivering the opinion, Justice Yusuf D. Kaba cited the long-established legal principle that it is preferable for guilty persons to go free than for an innocent person to be wrongfully convicted. “Where evidence against an accused leaves reasonable doubt,” Kaba stated, “such doubt must be resolved in favor of the defendant.”
The ruling closes a high-profile case that has gripped public attention since Blasuwoah’s killing, while reaffirming the constitutional standard that guilt must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. With Kaiser now released and his civil rights restored, authorities have not indicated whether any new investigation into Blasuwoah’s death will be pursued.
