A young Liberian female student, Ms. Winifred Meni Doe, has graduated from a prestigious University in Cyprus with an MA in Economics, making her the first and only female student amongst several Liberian students to have achieved the feat.
Ms. Doe achieved the milestone when she graduated from the Prestigious Near East University in Cyprus, where she obtained a Master’s Degree in Economics.
She cautioned her colleagues, mainly female students, back home to take their education very seriously, saying they should not be carried away by little or nothing that will not help them in the future.
MA in Economics is a Master’s program that equips its graduates with the advanced knowledge and quantitative skills required for an economic analyst in the business world, including the consulting industry, which also includes a Central Bank or government.
The training provides a thorough understanding of fundamental economic principles and the application of Mathematical methods and modeling. It is referred to as the Queen of Social Sciences and is highly respected in the field of study.
The fundamentals of the course work are deeply rooted in both qualitative and quantitative analysis, which also places high emphasis on the primacy of mathematics, and many universities thus also require quantitative techniques.
The MA in economics is a STEM-designated degree program.
Interestingly, the rigors of the course work have over the years prevented many male but mainly female students from venturing into it at the undergraduate level, leaving them less inclined to think about Master’s programs.
For many who know Ms. Winnifred Meni Doe, this did not come as a surprise to them. Winnifred, who is affectionately known as ‘Winnie Mandala’ in the slum community of Doe Community, on Bushrod Island in Montserrado County, had already displayed signs of her scholastic ingenuity and her insatiable appetite for school when she attended the Cathedral Catholic High School in Central Monrovia and graduated in 2013.
Not resting on her laurels, Winnie immediately enrolled at the United Methodist University, where she showed glimpses of her desire for higher education with the highest GPA amongst her female classmates while Majoring in Economics and minoring in Banking and Finance.
Before her graduation, Ms. Winnifred Meni Doe had earned the love and respect of challenges despite coming from the Slum community of Doe Community, and she was overwhelmingly elected as Finance Secretary of her class of 2018.
“With the negative news circulating on social media in recent times involving some young girls in the country, which has brought a dark cloud over the country mainly over young girls”, Ms. Winifred Meni Doe is quoted as saying, that saddens her heart and the hearts of many Liberians across the globe.
To date, many Liberian students are studying in some European countries, including Cyprus and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Ms. Winifred Meni Doe remains the only Liberian female with a Master’s Degree in Economics from Near East University, which is the number one university in North Cyprus and one of the highest-ranking universities in that part of the world.
We hope that Winnifred will keep on soaring in the field of academia and bring home the knowledge acquired to help the developmental agenda of Liberia.
Ms. Winifred Meni Doe’s academic success has made many, especially Liberian females, incredibly proud, and we hope that it serves as a motivation for many women across the country.
