CAREYBURG, LIBERIA — Chinese Ambassador Yin Chengwu handed over 304 modern agricultural machines to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. on Friday, October 30, 2026, outlining a three-point blueprint focused on achieving national food security, advancing modern farm infrastructure, and deepening bilateral agricultural cooperation.
The handover ceremony in Careyburg, Montserrado County, serves as a key outcome of the consensus reached between President Xi Jinping and President Boakai at the 2024 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).
Ambassador Yin detailed China’s commitment to supporting Liberia through three pillars:
Achieving Food Security, Advancing Agricultural Modernization, and Deepening Long-Term Cooperation. Ambassador Yin stressed that agriculture is fundamental to national security and socioeconomic stability.
He noted that China remains ready to share its experience in agricultural development and poverty reduction, citing China’s success in lifting over 800 million people out of poverty while supporting Liberia’s ARREST Agenda.
Highlighting Liberia’s abundant resources, Ambassador Yin affirmed China’s commitment to helping the nation transition from traditional farming to large-scale,sustainable operations. He encouraged capable Chinese enterprises to invest in Liberia’s agricultural sector while respecting local laws and community traditions.
Ambassador Yin described the handover as a new starting point, and called on Liberian authorities to ensure proper receipt, maintenance, and management of the equipment. He pledged continued Chinese support in technical exchanges, operator training, storage logistics, and market integration to build lasting productive capacity.
“While the handover ceremony will end, the partnership between the two countries will never end,” Ambassador Yin declared, reaffirming China’s role as a long-term partner in Liberia’s socioeconomic development.
Meanwhile, President Boakai received the machinery consignment on behalf of the Liberian government, and welcomed the support and pledged that his administration would ensure the equipment reaches farming communities to deliver immediate results.
“We are not responsible for the past. Our promise is to ensure that you have them now,” President Boakai stated. “When people give you gifts, the appreciation is not ceremonial; it is for them to see results.”
President Boakai instructed the Ministry of Agriculture to prioritize practical deployment over administrative ceremonies, ensuring all equipment is managed by qualified local technicians across the country.
Agriculture Minister Dr. J. Alexander Nuetah disclosed that the Ministry has established 13 mechanization hubs in Bong, Nimba, Lofa, Margibi, Montserrado, and Bomi Counties to house and service the machinery. The Ministry is partnering with the Public Procurement and Concessions Commission (PPCC) to establish private-sector management models that guarantee affordable access for smallholder farmers.
Six Chinese technical experts are currently leading a 40-day intensive training course for 130 Liberian operators and mechanics. Minister Nuetah added that mechanization hubs will expand to the remaining nine counties, beginning with Southeastern Liberia, in alignment with the National Agriculture Development Plan (2024–2030).
The donation marks another milestone in Sino-Liberian agricultural relations, which began in 2006 with emergency post-conflict farming support and expanded through the establishment of the US$6 million Agricultural Technology Demonstration Center at CARI in 2010.
