MONROVIA, LIBERIA – Chinese Ambassador to Liberia Yin Chengwu on Tuesday reaffirmed China’s commitment to bolstering Liberia’s healthcare sector, pledging sustained cooperation in infrastructure, medical supplies, and personnel training as the country moves toward introducing Universal Health Insurance.
Speaking at the 2026 National Health Review Conference, Ambassador Yin hailed the conference’s theme—“Introducing Universal Health Insurance in Liberia: Financing Quality Maternal and Newborn Care for All”—as a direct alignment with Liberia’s most urgent development goals. “Healthy mothers and newborns form the bedrock of a thriving nation,” he stated.
The Ambassador outlined three pillars of the China-Liberia health partnership: infrastructure development, medical supply chains, and professional capacity building. He cited the Jackson F. Doe Memorial Regional Referral Hospital—known as the China-Liberia Friendship Hospital—and the renovation of the Ministry of Health building as flagship projects. He also announced that the newly constructed National Clinical Diagnosis and Treatment Laboratory is nearing completion and will soon be handed over to Liberian authorities.
Recalling China’s rapid construction of an Ebola Treatment Center during past health emergencies, Ambassador Yin noted that Beijing continues to deliver critical medical equipment. Last month, a new batch of supplies was donated to the John F. Kennedy (JFK) Medical Center, while the China-aided “Enhancing Child Nutrition in Liberia’s First 1,000 Days” project is underway. He also highlighted the 2025 inauguration of JFK’s first cardiology department, established under the bilateral Paired Hospital Cooperation Mechanism.
On workforce development, the Ambassador emphasized that modern facilities require skilled staff to ensure sustainability. He noted that 18 successive Chinese medical teams have served in Liberia since 1984, working alongside local health workers. Since 2024, he added, 112 Liberian health professionals have traveled to China for training in clinical practice, hospital management, and public health.
“Liberia’s progression toward Universal Health Insurance deeply resonates with China’s global vision of building a community of health for all,” Ambassador Yin said. “China remains fully dedicated to walking hand-in-hand with Liberia to deepen our strategic partnership and deliver tangible benefits to both our peoples.”
The conference was also addressed by Health Minister Dr. Louise M. Kpoto and attended by cabinet ministers, lawmakers, international representatives, and county health officers.
