Confucius Institute At University of Liberia played host to a cultural and linguistic celebration on 23 of May 2025, as the prestigious 24th Chinese Bridge Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students was held at the Capitol Hill Auditorium. The event, organized by the Confucius Institute at the University of Liberia, brought together students, educators, and cultural enthusiasts to witness the powerful impact of language learning and cross-cultural exchange.
The Chinese Bridge (汉语桥) competition, an international initiative by China’s Ministry of Education, has become a vital platform for foreign students studying Chinese to demonstrate their proficiency and deepen their appreciation for Chinese culture. Since its inception, the competition has been held in over 120 countries and has served as a bridge linking young people across cultures.
In his opening remarks, the President of the University of Liberia, Prof. Dr. Laryli Maparyan welcomed participants and applauded the Confucius Institute for its efforts in promoting Chinese language education in Liberia. “This competition does not only test language skills,” she said, “but also serves as a forum for mutual understanding, respect, and friendship between China and Liberia.”
Participants Shine in Language and Cultural Mastery
Dozens of students from the University of Liberia and affiliated institutions competed in various categories, including Chinese speech, cultural knowledge, talent displays (such as calligraphy and traditional Chinese dance), and a question-and-answer segment. Contestants delivered powerful speeches in Mandarin, touching on themes such as global unity, education, and cultural identity.
One of the standout performers , who spoke fluently on the topic “One World, One Dream,” drawing enthusiastic applause from the audience. “Learning Chinese has opened doors for me,” the student said, “not only academically, but in understanding a whole new culture.”
The competition’s panel of judges included representatives from the Chinese Embassy, language professors, and local educators with experience in Asian studies. Winners of the local contest will have the opportunity to compete in the global finals in China, where they will join students from all over the world.
Strengthening China-Liberia Educational Ties
In an interview, Dr. Li Ming, Director of the Confucius Institute at UL, noted that this year’s competition marks a significant milestone in Liberia’s engagement with Chinese education. “We have seen growing interest from Liberian students in learning Chinese,” he said. “This competition inspires confidence and highlights the potential of Liberia’s youth in global affairs.”
The event concluded with a cultural performance featuring Chinese music, a short skit, and a joint song by Chinese and Liberian students symbolizing friendship and unity.
Looking Ahead
As China continues to expand its educational outreach across Africa, the Chinese Bridge competition remains a cornerstone in fostering meaningful people-to-people relationships. At the University of Liberia, the growing popularity of Chinese language courses points to a new chapter of international academic collaboration.
The Confucius Institute and the University of Liberia pledged to continue supporting language education and student exchange programs that contribute to mutual understanding and global citizenship.
