Monrovia, Liberia– The Confucius Institute at the University of Liberia (UL) has officially kicked off the 25th Chinese Bridge Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students, an event aimed at promoting cultural exchange, language learning, and international friendship between Liberia and China.

The ceremony brought together officials of the University of Liberia, representatives of the Chinese Confucius Institute, students, faculty members, members of the diplomatic community, and guests from across Monrovia

Speaking during the opening program, the President of the University of Liberia Dr. Layli Maparyan described the event as a major platform for strengthening intercultural understanding and global citizenship among young people.

“It is a profound honor for me to extend warm greetings to all of you on the occasion of the 25th Chinese Bridge Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students,” the UL President said. “This gathering celebrates language, culture, friendship, and international cooperation.”

The UL President Dr. Layli Maparyan   recalled attending the competition last year and praised students for their impressive Chinese language performances and cultural presentations. She noted that this year’s experience was even more meaningful following his recent visit to China.

According to her, she attended the World Chinese Language Conference in Beijing in November alongside Confucius Institute Director Dexter Samo and Co-Director Li Wei. The delegation also visited the Shanghai University of Science and Technology, one of UL’s partner institutions.

She said the visit deepened his appreciation for the importance of Chinese language and cultural programs at the University of Liberia.

“Our collaboration with Chinese institutions, particularly through the Confucius Institute, has enriched the academic and cultural experiences of many Liberian students,” he stated.

The UL President disclosed that through support from China and partner institutions, the university is preparing to launch a modern printing press that will serve both the university community and the general public.

She also praised students participating in the competition for their determination to study the Chinese language and culture, describing them as future ambassadors of cooperation between Liberia and China.

“In an increasingly interconnected world, such skills are invaluable,” she added. The event also featured cultural performances, martial arts displays, and talent showcases by students, reflecting the growing cultural ties between the two nations.

Organizer Song Weiyang announced that ten contestants are participating in this year’s competition, each demonstrating Chinese language proficiency, cultural understanding, and artistic talent before judges and guests.
