-Over Reported Threats Against Lawmaker

MONROVIA – The leadership of the House of Representatives has summoned the Minister of Justice and the Inspector General of the Liberia National Police (LNP) to address urgent security concerns raised by River Gee County Electoral District #3 Representative, Johnson S. N. Williams.
The decision follows a formal communication from Representative Williams, in which he reported repeated threats to his life and that of his family, while expressing frustration over what he describes as a persistent lack of response from the LNP.
According to his communication, this marks the fifth time since his election that he has formally reported security threats, with complaints dating back to 2024. Despite multiple requests—including appeals for armed police protection—no action has been taken by authorities, he said.
Williams alleged that a suspicious vehicle has been trailing both him and his wife. He recounted that his wife was followed while driving and, on a separate occasion, returned to her parked vehicle to find its windshield wipers damaged. The lawmaker further noted that he was followed from 9th Street in Sinkor to the University of Liberia campus, and later to the compound of Holy Innocents Catholic Church.
He also reported that on the same day, two unidentified individuals dressed in black followed him to his residence before departing in a Toyota Corolla with license plate number PC 546.
Williams referenced an earlier request dated February 15, 2024, seeking the assignment of an armed officer from the Police Support Unit (PSU)—specifically CPL Roland M. Taylay II—for VIP protection. That appeal, he said, remains unanswered.
He further cited a prior incident on December 4, 2022, in which he sustained injuries during an attack on his property linked to a dispute over an electrical pole. While suspects were reportedly arrested and taken to the Zone 8 Police Depot, the case remains unresolved.
Williams stressed that the ongoing threats, combined with heightened tensions stemming from the leadership crisis within the 55th Legislature since October 2024, have intensified his security concerns. “With these security concerns, and considering that I could be attacked anytime, anywhere, I am seriously concerned about the safety of me and my family. Hence, I need state security protection,” the lawmaker stated.
The House leadership said the appearance of the Justice Minister and Police Inspector General is intended to provide clarity on the matter and ensure that appropriate measures are taken to safeguard the lawmaker’s life and uphold public confidence in Liberia’s security institutions. The House reaffirmed its commitment to the safety and protection of all members and urged swift, decisive action from the relevant authorities.
