NIMBA COUNTY, Liberia — The Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) has announced the re-arrest of a notorious suspected drug trafficker, popularly known as “Charles Taylor,” nearly one year after he escaped from the agency’s detention facility in Ganta City, Nimba County.
In a statement issued on Thursday, July 30, 2026, the LDEA disclosed that the suspect was successfully apprehended on July 29, 2026, following months of intensive intelligence gathering, surveillance, and coordinated law enforcement operations aimed at tracking his whereabouts.
According to the agency, the suspect was initially arrested on August 19, 2025, after being apprehended by residents and members of the Ganta Business Community for his alleged involvement in illegal drug trafficking and related narcotics offenses.
However, while in the lawful custody of the LDEA in Ganta, the suspect managed to escape under circumstances that prompted an extensive manhunt involving security agencies and intelligence personnel across the country.
The agency said the suspect remained a high-priority fugitive until investigators, acting on credible intelligence, located and re-arrested him on July 29.
“The successful re-arrest of the suspect demonstrates the unwavering commitment of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency to ensuring that individuals who attempt to evade justice are ultimately held accountable,” the statement noted.
The LDEA confirmed that the suspect is now being held under tight security and will be prosecuted not only for the original drug-related offenses but also for additional criminal charges arising from his escape from lawful detention.
The agency commended the professionalism, resilience, and dedication of its officers whose sustained investigative efforts led to the suspect’s recapture. It also expressed appreciation to residents, community leaders, and members of the public who provided information that supported the operation.
Reaffirming its determination to combat the illegal drug trade, the LDEA emphasized that it remains committed to pursuing fugitives, dismantling drug trafficking networks, and strengthening law enforcement efforts against narcotics-related crimes throughout Liberia.
The agency further encouraged citizens to continue partnering with law enforcement by reporting suspected drug trafficking, abuse, and other illicit activities through its anti-drug hotlines, stressing that public cooperation remains critical to winning the fight against illegal drugs.
The re-arrest comes as the LDEA continues to intensify operations nationwide amid growing concerns over the proliferation of narcotics and substance abuse, particularly among young people. Authorities say the agency remains focused on ensuring that those engaged in the illegal drug trade are arrested, prosecuted, and brought before the courts in accordance with Liberian law.
