MONROVIA  – Aspiring journalists from the Peter Quaqua School of Journalism (PQSJ) traded classroom theory for real-world reporting on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, stepping into the heart of Liberia’s news ecosystem at the Ministry of Information MOI).

The group of News Writing students attended the Ministry’s weekly press conference—a key fixture on Monrovia’s press corps calendar—before embarking on a guided tour of ministry facilities led by Information Minister Hon. Jerolinmek M. Piah.

The press conference offered the trainees a front-row seat to the workings of government communications. Minister Piah briefed the room on national matters and key government initiatives, while Dr. Cecelia Cassell, Executive Director of the National Commission on Higher Education (NCHE), addressed current developments at the commission. Dozens of accredited journalists from major media houses covered the event, providing the students a live model of professional press engagement.

Following the briefing, Acting Assistant Minister for Information Services Lawrence M. Fahnbulleh joined Minister Piah in walking the students through the Liberia News Agency (LINA) newsroom and other departmental offices. The visit concluded with an informal question-and-answer session in the minister’s office, where Piah shared updates on ongoing work at the ministry, including a major renovation effort.

Jerromie S. Walters, News Writing Trainer at PQSJ, praised the Ministry for expanding the visit beyond the original plan. “What began as an observation turned into an immersive learning experience,” Walters said. This came after he had previously appealed to the Liberia News Agency (LINA) Director General A. Trokon Tarr for internship opportunities for PQSJ students, and expressed hope for a continued partnership.

As PQSJ enters its final exam week, students will use audio recordings from Tuesday’s press conference to craft traditional news stories for their exam scheduled for Wednesday, June 10, 2026. The Peter Quaqua School of Journalism says it remains committed to advancing media excellence in Liberia, equipping its students with practical skills, ethical grounding, and a strong sense of civic responsibility.
