-Gets endorsed by several legislators, others
In what they believe to be a quest to
challenge the current government and its perceived authoritarian tendencies, the Progressive Students Alliance (PROSA) of the University of Liberia planned a peaceful assembly that’s slated for April 19, 2024, appears to be gaining strength, as it has been endorsed both by ordinary Liberians and legislators.
In a recent statement, PROSA condemned what they described as the “growing and creeping dictatorship” of Mr. Joseph Nyumah Boakai, the current political leader. The student movement pledged to disrupt the status quo and ensure that business would not continue as usual under Boakai’s administration.
“We, the entire leadership of the Executive Council, Supreme Council, and General Congress of the Progressive Students Alliance, congratulate the resilience and courage of Liberia’s progressive lawmakers who have endorsed our call for a peaceful march on April 19,” the statement reads.
Current Lawmakers including Rep. Frank Saah Foko Jr., Rep. Yekeh Kolubah, Hon. Zinnias Norman, Rep. Sumo Kollie Mulbah, and Rep. Eugene Kollie have thrown their support behind the student-led initiative.
“As a consequence of the momentous and historical endorsement which has gained national excitement and an unprecedented wave of mobilization amongst the masses of our people, the Avant-guard party as in “ PROSA” condemns the recent attacks from Mr. Boakai’s cold bloody death squad led by it’s most notorious gang leaders; Abraham Kromah of DEA, Sam Gaye head of NSA and Francis Nyumalin, Minister of Internal Affairs against the life of the chairman of PROSA, Cde. Richardson Mwalimu Jallah Koiboi and other executive committee members of the party,” PROSA’s statement notes.
It continues, “The Revolutionary Avant-garde party also wants to vehemently condemn plans to eliminate Hon. Yekeh Kolubah as lawmaker of electoral district # 10 because of his recent critical outburst against Mr. Boakai and his group of National looters.”
Furthermore, the party started: “The party wants to bring this to the attention of all well-meaning Liberians home and abroad that she has made it official that “ PROSA” as a party has extended the planned March initially slated for April 14 as intimated doing our recent press conference to April 19 due to the pleas from some religious people from the Christian and Muslim communities that based on the fact that most of our people will be in church worshipping and at the same asked that it be done after the Ramadan for a broader participation of the masses.
The Progressive Students Alliance of the University of Liberia has also expressed their disappointment in what they described as the lack of public statements from the Executive Mansion and Mr. Boakai in response to the recent fire outbreaks and pandemic in the country. PROSA is concerned about the silence during these troubling times, as many people are suffering from the loss of relatives and properties due to fire disasters.
PROSA is taking legal action against the government of Mr. Boakai, seeking USD 15 million in damages. They are also calling on those affected by the fire disasters to gather on April 14 at Catholic Junction to demand compensation for their losses. PROSA accuses the Boakai regime of forceful demolitions to please a Russian arms dealer known for smuggling arms into the country.
The Avant-garde Party has also invited the wives of the Armed Forces of Liberia, the Liberia National Police, and all citizens to march in solidarity for fire victims to its peaceful assembly comes April 19, 2024. The assembly will address issues such as corruption involving USD 250,000 from Amos Tweh at LPRC and a bribery scandal of USD 4,500 aimed at impeaching the Speaker of the 55th National Legislature, Jonathan Fonati Kofa.
Moreover, PROSA is calling for accountability and justice for those affected by the fire disasters and other alleged corrupt activities within the government.
