It can be recalled that on Monday, January 29, 2024, President Joseph Boakai, delivering his State of the Nation address, said the drug epidemic, especially the use of “KUSH”, is an existential threat eating away at the future of the country.

He said “We must stand up and face this national security risk together. Given the need for immediate action to make good my pledge to the thousands of families burdened by this crisis.” president Boakai said. During the annual message president Boakai, used the occasion to declare Drugs and Substance abuse as a Public Health Emergency.

As a means of tickling this national Emergency president Boakai established a multi-sectoral steering committee comprising the Ministry of Health – Chair Ministry of Justice – Co-Chair Ministry of Youth and Sports- Member Ministry of Gender, Children, and Social Protection – Member Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) – Member and the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP) – Member.

“In this fight, me and my Vice President, we will be the first to take a drug test and I urge all others to follow.” President Boakai noted.

The group Executive Director wants President Boakai to include the Religious Community, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), and Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) on the steering committee as a means of fostering the fight in good harmony.

Moreover, the “ Hope for Young People Inc., Executive Director has also thanked President Joseph Boakai, for committing him and his vice president to be the first to make the drug test commendable.

He said these are steps in the right direction that they as activists have been calling for over the years; noting that such pronouncement shows the government’s readiness to fight the proliferation of illicit drugs and other harmful substances in the country.

“We are grateful Mr. President for your timely intervention, which when implemented will rescue thousands of youth from being addicted to drugs and restore the dignity and true identities of many young people who have lost their way because of drug addiction.” Thomas Bundoo said.

The Hope for Young People Inc., Executive Director said civil society organizations play a crucial role in addressing drug and substance abuse in the community.

According to him CSO organizations are currently engaged in the fight against substance abuse and are making a meaningful impact in the republic.

He lamented that religious communities, for example, often have a strong influence on the beliefs and behaviors of their members as such involving them will be a great help.

They can provide moral guidance, support, and counseling to individuals and families affected by drug abuse. Additionally, they can also provide educational programs and outreach initiatives to prevent drug abuse in the first place.

“CSOs and CBOs are also essential partners in addressing drug abuse. They often have grassroots connections and are deeply embedded in the communities they serve.” Mr. Bundoo continues.

Meanwhile, the Hope for Young People INC, Executive Director can provide valuable insights, resources, and support for individuals struggling with addiction. Moreover, they can also advocate for policy changes and provide community-based interventions to address the root causes of drug abuse.

By including these groups in the multi-sectoral steering committee, the government can benefit from their expertise, networks, and resources.

He continues by saying that these groups when included will also ensure that the response to the drug epidemic is comprehensive and inclusive of all stakeholders. He added that this collaborative approach is essential for tackling such a complex and pervasive issue.

The group however recommends increase access to rehabilitation and treatment facilities: The government can invest in and expand existing rehabilitation and treatment facilities to provide necessary support for those struggling with drug addiction.

Implement educational programs: The government can implement educational programs in schools and communities to raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse and provide information about where to seek help.

Strengthen law enforcement: The government can work to strengthen law enforcement efforts to crack down on drug trafficking and distribution, as well as to deter drug use through enforcement of existing drug laws.

Support community-based initiatives: The government can support and fund community-based initiatives aimed at preventing drug abuse and providing support for those affected by addiction.

Provide economic opportunities: The government can invest in programs that provide economic opportunities for young people, reducing the likelihood of turning to drugs as a means of escape or income.

Collaborate with international partners: The government can collaborate with international partners and organizations to share best practices and resources for addressing drug abuse and addiction.

This will help to clear the rumors in the public that most public officials operate under the influence of drugs and some even aid drug traffickers in the process of trafficking those illicit substances. We look forward to contributing our expertise in the fight and illicit drugs in Liberia.
