IN A WORLD where harmful practices against women persist, it is essential to acknowledge and celebrate those who stand up against them. Today, we applaud the traditional women of Bong County for performing the traditional ritual and traditionally, and officially over their sande related materials to the National Council of Chiefs and Elders of Liberia, as a commitment to the perpetual ban placed on FGM earlier this year.

WE BELIEVE THAT their courage and determination in challenging deeply rooted tradition like sande, deserve our utmost admiration and appreciation.

FOR CENTURIES, FGM has been practiced in various parts of the world, including Liberia, despite its negative physical and psychological consequences. It is a deeply entrenched cultural practice that has perpetuated gender inequality and violated the rights of countless women and girls.

HOWEVER, IN RECENT years, there has been a remarkable shift in Liberia, thanks to the efforts of National Council of Chiefs and Elders (NCCEL), the government of Liberia and her partners, including UN Women, the Embassy of Sweden, as well as the traditional women who have taken a stand against this harmful practice.

WE BELIEVE THESE traditional women have recognized the effects of FGM and the urgent need for change. They have defied societal norms and traditions, challenging the very foundations that have upheld this practice for generations. Their courage lies in their willingness to question and dismantle harmful traditions, even when faced with resistance and criticism.

WHAT SETS THESE traditional women apart is their unwavering commitment to a perpetual ban on FGM, which was announced by the Chair of the Council of Chiefs and Elders in February of this year. We believe that they understand that a one-time declaration is not enough; it requires sustained efforts to eradicate this practice entirely. By committing themselves to a perpetual ban, they ensure that future generations of girls will be spared from the physical and emotional pain inflicted by FGM.

LIKE THE WOMEN of Montserrado, and Grand Cape Mount, the traditional women of Bong County have emerged as leaders for other counties that are yet to take the bold step, challenging the status quo and reshaping the narrative around FGM.

WHILE THE GOVERNMENT and some of the traditional people of Liberia have been at the forefront of this movement, it is crucial to acknowledge the collaborative efforts of various stakeholders. Local and international organizations like- UN Women, the EU, Liberia Crusaders for Peace, etc… They have rallied behind them, providing resources, expertise, and support. Together, they have formed a formidable alliance, united in their commitment to ending FGM.

THE RECENT COMMITMENT by the traditional women of Bong County to adhere to the perpetual ban on female genital mutilation is a cause for celebration and inspiration. Like the other counties that have done similar, ,their courage, leadership, and unwavering determination have paved the way for change, challenging harmful traditions and empowering women and girls.

IT IS OUR collective responsibility to stand alongside them, supporting their efforts and amplifying their voices. Together, we can create a future where no woman or girl is subjected to the pain and suffering caused by FGM.
