President Joseph Nyumah Boakai has disclosed his administration’s plan to close down Western Cluster Mining Company in Bomi County. The President told journalists that the mining company is not mining but depleting the resources of Liberia without the country benefiting.

The Liberian leader made the disclosure on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, in DC – Clark Town, Bomi County when he embarked on an assessment of his administration’s hundred days deliverables, mainly the road projects.

President Boakai revealed that he has informed Western Cluster through its lawyer that his administration is going to close the company down. “I just met with the lawyer of Western Clusters Mining Company and I told him that we are going to close them down.” The president said.

The Liberian leader added that if the government doesn’t close down Western Cluster, Liberia will lose all the bridges and be left with nothing but disaster.

“If we don’t close them down, we will lose all our bridges and that will be disastrous for this country. When I went up the hill the last time, I learned that Western Cluster is not mining, they are just taking our resources and we get no reward for it.” President Boakai added.

The president warned that his administration will not allow foreigners to take the resources of Liberia without investing, and if any foreign company wants to invest, they must develop.

“I’m not going to sit here and allow the people to hark our resources and leave like that. If they want to invest further, they will have to build a railway. You can’t damage our road and leave our country like that.

Meanwhile, the Liberian Leader admonished Liberians to get more engaged in the engineering sectors of Liberia.  He added that engineering companies would come to the country and take money from the bank to operate but employed little or no Liberian to work. Stating that the act places more burden on the national government.

“This is no fun. This is serious business. I was just thinking what is it that some of these foreigners bringing. You come here and borrow money from the banks and everybody runs to government. You can’t complain that the people are taking our jobs when you are not willing to do this kind of thing.”

President Boakai further added that the engineering sector is a source of employment.

Therefore, he would love to see more Liberians engage in engineering. If one gets engaged, it should be done well that the government would not take the contract to give to foreigners.

“And I like to see more Liberians doing this. When you doing it, do it well so that the government will not have to give contracts to foreigners.”
