Grand Bassa County Senator Karnga-Lawrence, who’s also the controversial Political Leader of the opposition Liberty Party (LP), was suspended by the party on March 5, 2022, for what the party, through its Chairman Musa Bility, reported as her failure to pay her membership due for several months.

Following the climax of a duration given to Senator Lawrence and other officials of the party who were suspended to settle their financial obligations, they failed to do so, and as such, she was later expelled from her offices in LP since March 5, 2022, along with Sen. Abraham Darius Dillon, Mr. Kla Edward Toomey, and Mr. Daniel Sando, which was reversed through court action.

But during the weekend, the Liberty Party again announced the expulsion and revocation of the memberships of Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence and other key officials of the party.

Senator Lawrence, Senator Abraham Darius Dillon of Montserrado County, who is the former Vice Chair for Political Affairs of the LP, Former Secretary General Jacob Smith, Senator Steve Zargo of Lofa County, and Daniel Sando were all expelled for supporting the candidacy of former Vice President Joseph N. Boakai of the Unity Party against the interests of the Liberty Party.

On Friday, July 14, 2023, the National Executive Committee and Party Chairman, Musa Bility, signed a communication that resulted in the expulsion of the Grand Bassa County Senator.

“This decision comes out of the fact that these individuals have accepted to take positions to campaign for candidates other than the Liberty Party Candidates in the 2023 elections”, Chairman Bility stated, recalling that similar action was taken against Senator Dillon in 2011, when he opted to be a member of the Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf campaign team against the interest of the LP.

In a recent radio interview, Mr. Bility stated, “The Liberty Party is firm, the Liberty Party remains supreme, and we will continue to consolidate the party to be a vibrant one,” warning the LP expelled officials to refrain from conducting business in the name of the party or face legal repercussions under the law. He disclosed that formal communications would be sent out to the expelled officials.

In December 2021, the controversial Political Leader of the opposition Liberty Party (LP), Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, was suspended along with Montserrado County Senator Abraham Darius Dillon by Mr. Bility for their alleged failure to pay financial obligations and remain in good standing.

Liberty Party Chairman Musa Hassan Bility Senator Karnga Lawrence owed USD $18,000 for the entire year 2021, according to the content of a letter that Musa Hassan Bility, the Party Chairman, signed and sent to the suspended official.

She was given three months to make payments or face permanent suspension and expulsion from the party, which was later served.

Also suspended were sixteen other party executives for “administrative reasons.”

The Liberty Party distanced itself from a fundraising event that Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence, its expelled political leader, had announced in August 2022 on the grounds that she was acting without the party’s consent.

Senator Karnga-Lawrence and other expelled members of the party launched a fundraiser to support the party’s activities.

However, in a statement signed by the chairman, Musa Bility, and the Secretary-General, Martin Kollah, the Liberty Party described the use of the party’s titles by Senator Karnga-Lawrence and other expelled individuals as fraudulent.

“Sen. Lawrence has unauthorizedly organized a Fundraiser in LP’s name to solicit funds from LP partisans and supporters. The LP wishes to distance itself from these activities and informs the public that it has not sanctioned any such fundraiser, that funds being collected are not for use by any sanctioned LP activities, and that anyone participating is doing so at his or her own risk as the Party has not authorized any such activity,” the Liberty Party indicated in a statement.

The party has suspended Senator Karnga-Lawrence and company since March 5, 2022, and they have received numerous warnings to stop, according to Liberty Party officials. Despite having been expelled from their offices in LP since March 5, 2022, Sen. Karnga-Lawrenec, Sen. Abraham Darius Dillon, Mr. Kla Edward Toomey, and Mr. Daniel Sando continue to unauthorizingly issue public statements in the Party’s name and illegally conduct a parallel “LP”.

As such, the LP began the internal process, as required by its constitution, to immediately expel these individuals from the Party. The LP informs the public that pronouncements from these individuals are not the position of the LP and should not be considered as such.

The Liberty Party also stated that the only legitimate LP Diaspora Chapter in the USA (LP-USA) has been duly and legally registered and incorporated (Certificate #6787399) in the state of Delaware, USA, under the name Liberty Party USA and dba LP-USA. Therefore, individuals purporting to be officials of LP-USA or acting in the name of LP-USA are advised to immediately cease and desist as they are committing business impersonation, which is the unauthorized use of an existing brand name, and this is a crime under United States law. Further actions under the name “LP-USA”, linked to LP, will result in the matter being referred to the proper authorities of the United States government for action.
